1Merriam-Webster, an American dictionary company, has made a new edition of its Collegiate Dictionary. It is the first new paper version in 22 years. The company announced the news on September 25, 2025.

2The new book has more than 5,000 new words. One of them is rizz, a slang word for charm. Doomscroll is in the book too. It means to keep reading bad news on a screen for a long time.

3Petrichor is another new word. It is the nice smell in the air when rain falls after many warm, dry days. Dumbphone is also new. It means a simple phone from the time before smartphones.

4The book weighs nearly five pounds, or about 2.3 kilograms. Some experts said paper dictionaries are useful at schools that do not allow phones. The new dictionary went on sale on November 18.

全文訳

1アメリカの辞書会社メリアム・ウェブスターが、「カレッジエイト辞典」の新しい版を作りました。紙の辞書が新しくなるのは22年ぶりです。会社は2025年9月25日にこのニュースを発表しました。

2新しい辞書には、5000語以上の新しい言葉が入っています。その1つが rizz で、「人を引きつける魅力」を表すくだけた言葉です。doomscroll も入りました。画面で悪いニュースをずっと読み続けてしまうことです。

3petrichor も新しく加わった言葉です。暖かく乾いた日が続いたあとに雨が降ったときの、いいにおいのことです。dumbphone も新しい言葉です。スマホが登場する前の時代の、シンプルな携帯電話のことです。

4この辞書の重さは約5ポンド、つまり約2.3キロです。スマホが使えない学校では紙の辞書が役に立つ、と話す専門家もいます。新しい辞書は11月18日に発売されました。

文法ポイント：keep + ～ing（～し続ける）

keep のあとに動詞の ing 形を置くと「～し続ける」という意味になる。本文の keep reading bad news（悪いニュースを読み続ける）がその例。
