A City Rule: Two Hours of Phone Time

1Toyoake, a city in Aichi Prefecture, made a new rule about smartphones in September 2025. The rule asks people to use phones and tablets for two hours or less a day. This does not include time for work or study.

2The city assembly passed the rule on September 22. It started on October 1. The city says it is the first rule of its kind in Japan.

3There are also times for children to put their devices away at night. Elementary school students should stop using devices by 9 p.m. Junior high students and older should stop by 10 p.m.

4The main goal is to help people get enough sleep. There is no punishment for people who use their phones longer. The mayor said two hours is just a guide. Each family is also asked to make its own phone rules.

文法ポイント:助動詞 should(~すべきだ)

Elementary school students should stop using devices by 9 p.m.
