AI Makes New Medicines

1Scientists in the United States used AI to design new medicines against dangerous bacteria. A team at MIT shared the study in August 2025.

2Some bacteria are very hard to kill. Medicines called antibiotics don't work on them anymore. People call these bacteria superbugs. Doctors around the world are worried about them.

3The team's AI designed new medicines atom by atom. It came up with more than 36 million possible compounds. The team chose some of the best ones and made them in the lab.

4Two of the new compounds killed superbugs in lab tests and in mice. They look very different from the medicines we use today.

5The new medicines are not ready for people yet. They still need many more tests. A nonprofit group is now working to improve the two compounds.
