Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake Off Kamchatka Triggers Pacific-Wide Tsunami Warnings

1A magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30, 2025, triggering tsunami warnings around the Pacific Ocean. The earthquake hit at 8:24 a.m. Japan time, about 110 kilometers from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Early estimates of its size were lower, but scientists later raised the magnitude to 8.8. It was one of the most powerful earthquakes since the 2011 disaster in Japan.

2In Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings along the Pacific coast. Evacuation orders covered nearly 2 million people, and many residents climbed to higher ground. The highest wave recorded in Japan was 1.3 meters at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture. Smaller waves reached Hokkaido, Chiba, and the island of Hachijojima.

3Communities closer to the earthquake felt stronger effects. In Severo-Kurilsk, a small Russian town in the Kuril Islands, waves flooded the coast and about 2,000 residents were evacuated. Across the ocean in Hawaii, waves of more than 1 meter were reported, but there was no major damage. Ports were also closed in places as far away as Chile and Peru.

4Officials stressed that a tsunami is not a single wave. Tsunami waves can keep arriving for hours, and a later wave can be larger than the first one. For this reason, people were told to stay away from beaches and harbors until the warnings were lifted.

5The earthquake occurred along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where many of the world's largest earthquakes happen. Near Kamchatka, the Pacific Plate is sliding beneath the North American Plate by about 80 millimeters a year. The same area produced a magnitude 9.0 earthquake in 1952, which also sent a tsunami across the Pacific.
