A Big Earthquake and a Pacific Tsunami

1A very strong earthquake hit the sea near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on July 30, 2025. Its magnitude was 8.8. It was one of the strongest earthquakes since 2011.

2The earthquake caused a tsunami in the Pacific Ocean. Japan, Hawaii, and many other places sent out tsunami warnings. In Japan, nearly 2 million people were told to evacuate. Many of them moved to higher ground.

3The highest wave in Japan was about 1.3 meters, at a port in Iwate. A tsunami is different from a normal wave. It moves a huge amount of water, so even a small one is dangerous. Officials said that tsunami waves can come again and again for hours.

4Kamchatka is in a place where two plates of the Earth meet. The Pacific Plate slowly moves under the North American Plate. It moves about 8 centimeters every year, about twice as fast as your fingernails grow.

全文訳

12025年7月30日、ロシアのカムチャツカ半島の近くの海で、とても強い地震が起きました。マグニチュードは8.8でした。2011年以来、もっとも強い地震のひとつでした。

2この地震で、太平洋に津波が起きました。日本やハワイなど、たくさんの場所で津波警報が出されました。日本では、約200万人に避難するよう指示が出ました。その多くの人が、高い場所へ移動しました。

3日本でいちばん高い津波は、岩手県の港で観測された約1.3メートルでした。津波は、ふつうの波とはちがいます。とても多くの水を動かすので、小さな津波でも危険なのです。担当者は、津波は何時間もくり返しやって来ることがあると言いました。

4カムチャツカは、地球のプレート2枚が出会う場所にあります。太平洋プレートが、北アメリカプレートの下へゆっくりもぐりこんでいます。その速さは1年に約8センチで、つめが伸びる速さのおよそ2倍です。

文法ポイント：最上級（the ＋ -est / one of the ＋ 最上級 ＋ 複数名詞）

「いちばん～」は the highest のように the ＋ -est で表す。「もっとも～なもののひとつ」は one of the strongest earthquakes のように、後ろの名詞を複数形にする。
