Robot Surgeon Operates Without Human Hands
1A surgical robot has completed a key stage of gallbladder removal in a lab without a human controlling its arms. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University in the United States reported the results on July 9, 2025, in the journal Science Robotics.
2The robot, called SRT-H, was tested eight times on gallbladders in a lab, not on living patients. In each test, it carried out 17 tasks in a row, including clipping small blood vessels and cutting tissue. The team said the robot succeeded in all eight tests.
3The robot was not programmed step by step. Instead, it learned by watching videos of surgeons, with each clip paired with simple written descriptions. Its AI uses the same basic design as popular chatbots, so it can also follow spoken instructions from the team. When the tissue looked different from what it expected, the robot adjusted its movements and kept working.
4The robot took a few minutes longer than a human surgeon. However, the researchers said its results were comparable to those of an expert surgeon. In 2022, an earlier robot from the same team operated on a live pig, but it needed specially marked tissue and a fixed plan.
5The new robot is not ready for hospitals. The team now wants it to perform a full operation from start to finish. The researchers also plan to test the robot on live animals and train it for other types of surgery.

本文の with each clip paired with simple written descriptions は「それぞれの動画に説明文が組み合わされた状態で」という意味。
