Plastic-Eating Waxworms Store Plastic as Body Fat

1About 2,000 waxworms can break down an entire polyethylene bag in as little as 24 hours, researchers from Brandon University in Canada said. The team, led by biologist Bryan Cassone, presented the findings at the Society for Experimental Biology's annual conference in Antwerp, Belgium, on July 8, 2025. Waxworms are the caterpillars of the greater wax moth, and in nature they feed on beeswax in honeybee hives.

2Polyethylene is the world's most widely produced plastic, with more than 100 million tonnes made every year. It can take decades or even centuries to break down naturally. Scientists first reported in 2017 that waxworms could break down this plastic.

3The new research shows that waxworms convert the plastic they eat into lipids, which are stored as body fat. Cassone compared this to humans storing extra fat from their diet instead of burning it for energy. However, a plastic-only diet is harmful to the insects. Waxworms fed nothing but plastic survive no more than a few days and lose a lot of weight. Plastic does not contain the other nutrients they need.

4The team is testing whether adding sugars to the diet could keep the worms healthy and reduce the number needed. Cassone described two possible paths for the future. The first is to raise large numbers of waxworms on plastic mixed with other food. The second is to find out how the worms digest plastic and copy the process in factories, without live worms. Early data suggest that leftover insects could also be used as feed for farmed fish.

The team is testing whether adding sugars to the diet could keep the worms healthy
