Hungry Caterpillars Eat Plastic
1About 2,000 caterpillars can break down a plastic bag in just one day, scientists in Canada said. The caterpillars are called waxworms. In nature, they eat the wax in beehives.
2The team found that waxworms turn the plastic into body fat. This is a little like people storing extra food as fat. But the waxworms cannot live on plastic alone. If they eat only plastic, they live just a few days.
3Plastic bags are made of polyethylene. People make more than 100 million tons of it every year. It can take decades or even centuries to break down in nature.
4The scientists think adding sugar to the plastic could help the waxworms. They also hope to copy the waxworms' way of breaking down plastic in factories. The team shared its research at a science meeting in Belgium in July 2025.

本文の adding sugar to the plastic(プラスチックに砂糖を加えること)や way of breaking down plastic(プラスチックを分解する方法)がその例。
