Rubin Observatory's First Images Reveal 2,104 New Asteroids

1The Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile released its first images on June 23, 2025. In about 10 hours of observations, the observatory found 2,104 asteroids that had never been seen before. Seven of the new asteroids are near-Earth asteroids, whose orbits bring them close to Earth's path around the Sun.

2That number is large for such a short time. All other observatories on the ground and in space together discover about 20,000 asteroids a year.

3The observatory sits on the summit of Cerro Pachón, a mountain in Chile. Its 8.4-meter telescope carries the largest digital camera ever built. The camera weighs about 3,000 kilograms and takes 3,200-megapixel images. Each image covers as much sky as 45 full moons.

4One of the first images combined 678 separate exposures taken over about seven hours. It shows the Trifid and Lagoon nebulae, clouds of gas and dust several thousand light-years from Earth. Stacking the exposures revealed faint details that a single picture would miss. Another image, built from more than 1,100 pictures, captured about 10 million galaxies.

5The observatory is named after Vera Rubin, an American astronomer who found strong evidence for dark matter. Its main project, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, will photograph the visible night sky every few days for 10 years. Over that time, the observatory is expected to record about 20 billion galaxies. The 10 million galaxies in the first image are only about 0.05 percent of that total.

本文の asteroids that had never been seen before は「(発見の時点まで)一度も見られたことがなかった小惑星」。
