A Giant Camera Finds Thousands of Asteroids
1A new observatory in Chile shared its first pictures of space on June 23, 2025. It is called the Vera C. Rubin Observatory.
2The observatory has the largest digital camera ever built. The camera can take pictures with 3,200 megapixels. One picture covers a part of the sky as big as 45 full moons.
3In just 10 hours, the observatory found 2,104 asteroids that no one had seen before. Seven of them travel close to Earth's path around the Sun. Another picture showed about 10 million galaxies.
4The observatory is named after Vera Rubin, an American scientist. She found strong evidence for dark matter, something we cannot see in space. The observatory plans to take pictures of the night sky for 10 years.
