Are Whales Sending Us Bubble Messages?
1Humpback whales have been filmed blowing large bubble rings during friendly encounters with humans, scientists reported in June 2025. The paper appeared in the journal Marine Mammal Science. Its authors included researchers from the University of California, Davis, and the SETI Institute, which searches for intelligent life beyond Earth.
2The project began with a video filmed in 1988, in which a humpback blew 19 bubble shapes, including 11 rings, in about 10 minutes. The team then gathered footage from swimmers, boats, drones and aircraft. In total, they analyzed 12 episodes involving 39 rings made by 11 whales. The sightings came from the North and South Pacific and the North Atlantic.
3Humpbacks are known to use bubbles to trap fish and to compete for mates. These rings, however, appeared during friendly encounters, when the whales seemed curious about people. In nine of the 12 episodes, the whales approached people before releasing the rings. The researchers said the whales might be playing, watching how humans react or trying to communicate.
4A SETI Institute scientist on the team said the whales show that a curious intelligence may try to make contact with other species. He said that idea matters when scientists search for signals from space. A biologist who was not involved said it was too soon to draw conclusions from so few cases. She noted that two of the sightings were made from planes, which suggests whales may also blow rings when no people are close by.

本文の the SETI Institute, which searches for ... や a video filmed in 1988, in which a humpback blew ...
