Ocean Heat Turns Coral Reefs White
1Ocean heat has hit 84 percent of the world's coral reefs, scientists said in April 2025. It is the worst coral bleaching event on record. Reefs in 82 countries and areas were affected.
2Corals have bright colors because tiny algae live inside them. The algae also make food for the corals. When the water stays too hot, the corals push the algae out. Then the corals turn white, and this is called bleaching.
3White corals are still alive, but they can die more easily. About a quarter of all kinds of sea life depend on coral reefs.
4This is the fourth global bleaching event since 1998. The last one, from 2014 to 2017, affected 68 percent of reefs. The new event started in 2023. Scientists in the Netherlands and Florida are now growing and caring for corals to help damaged reefs.

Reefs in 82 countries and areas were affected. や this is called bleaching がその例。
