A Century-Old Mystery Swims into View
1Scientists have filmed a colossal squid alive in the deep sea for the first time, 100 years after the species was named. The squid in the video was a see-through juvenile, not a giant. Until then, the colossal squid had never been seen alive in its natural habitat.
2The footage was recorded on March 9, 2025, near the South Sandwich Islands in the South Atlantic. A research vessel operated by the Schmidt Ocean Institute was on a 35-day expedition with the Ocean Census, a project that searches for new marine species. The ship's remotely operated vehicle, a robot sub called SuBastian, spotted the squid about 600 meters below the surface. Two independent squid experts later confirmed what the video showed.
3The squid was a juvenile only about 30 centimeters long. Young colossal squid have see-through bodies, and they lose this feature as they mature. Colossal squid also have hooks in the middle of their eight arms, which helps experts tell them apart from similar squid. Fully grown colossal squid are estimated to reach seven meters and 500 kilograms. That would make them the heaviest invertebrates on the planet.
4Until now, most of what researchers knew came from remains found in the stomachs of sperm whales and seabirds. Fishing crews have also met adults that attacked the toothfish they had caught. Those dead or dying animals revealed little about the species' behavior.
5Scientists said little is still known about the squid's life cycle. The species was first formally named in 1925. In January 2025, a team on the same ship also filmed a glacial glass squid alive for the first time, near Antarctica.

the boats had caught(船がすでにとっていた)も同じ形。
