A Giant Squid's First Video
1A research team has filmed a living colossal squid in the ocean for the first time. Scientists named this squid 100 years ago. Until now, nobody had seen a living one in its deep-sea home.
2The team was exploring the deep sea near the South Sandwich Islands. The team's underwater robot went down about 600 meters. Suddenly, a small squid appeared on the camera. Experts checked the video and said it was a young colossal squid.
3The baby was only about 30 centimeters long. Its body was clear, like glass. Scientists think adults can grow to about 7 meters and weigh 500 kilograms. That makes them the heaviest animals without a backbone on Earth.
4Before this, scientists mostly found pieces of the squid inside whales and seabirds. Now they can finally watch a young one swim. The video was filmed on March 9, 2025, during a 35-day trip to look for new sea animals.
