Japan's 3D-Printed Station Goes Up Overnight
1A railway company in Japan built a new station building in a single night, using parts made by a 3D printer. West Japan Railway Company installed the building at Hatsushima Station in Arida, Wakayama Prefecture, in late March 2025. The companies involved said it is the world's first 3D-printed station building.
2The parts were not printed at the station. A robotic arm at a factory in Kumamoto Prefecture squeezed out a special mortar, one thin layer at a time. The printer made four hollow sections over about a week. Workers then filled the sections with steel bars and concrete to make them stronger.
3Trains use the line from early morning until late at night, so the crew had only a few hours to work. The last train left at around midnight on March 25. Using a crane, the crew lifted the four sections off trucks and joined them in about two hours. The work ended at around 5 a.m., before the first train of the day.
4The building covers about 10 square meters, or roughly six tatami mats. It is about 2.6 meters tall and 6.3 meters wide. Its curved walls show mandarin oranges and hairtail fish, two local specialties. The new building replaced a wooden one that had stood since 1948.
5A JR West official said building a similar station in the usual way takes a month or two. The station building opened to passengers on July 22, 2025, with a ticket machine, a simple IC card reader and a bench. JR West said it hopes to use 3D printing for other railway buildings as well.

Using a crane, the crew lifted the four sections ...
