866 New Animals from the Sea

1Scientists have found 866 new kinds of sea animals. A big ocean project called the Ocean Census shared the news in March 2025. The project is run by a Japanese foundation and a British group.

2One new animal is a shark that looks like a guitar. It was found near Tanzania in Africa. Another is a sea snail that lives 200 to 500 meters deep. Snails in its family catch food with poison harpoons.

3The animals were found in many places, from 1 meter to almost 5,000 meters deep. Divers, small submarines and robots helped the scientists.

4Scientists think we know only about 10 percent of the animals in the ocean. Naming a new animal can take up to 13 and a half years. The project wants to make this work much faster. It planned 10 more ocean trips for 2025.

Naming a new animal can take up to 13 and a half years.
