The Race to Name the Ocean's Unknown Life
1An international ocean project announced in March 2025 that it had found 866 new marine species. The Ocean Census was launched in 2023 by Japan's Nippon Foundation and Nekton, a British ocean research group. The project works with more than 800 scientists at over 400 institutions around the world.
2The species came from 10 expeditions and eight workshops where experts studied the samples. Divers, crewed submersibles and remotely operated robots found them at depths from 1 meter to 4,990 meters. The list includes sponges, crabs, sea spiders, reef fish and deep-sea limpets.
3One highlight is a guitar shark found about 200 meters deep off Mozambique and Tanzania. It is only the 38th known species in its group, and about two-thirds of that group is threatened. Another is a sea snail found off New Caledonia and Vanuatu. Snails in its family hunt with venomous harpoons. Researchers think the venoms of these snails may be useful for pain relief and cancer treatment.
4The project says only about 10 percent of ocean life has been discovered. That leaves an estimated one to two million species still unknown. Officially naming a single species can take up to 13.5 years, so some may die out before they are ever recorded.
5To speed things up, discoveries are entered into an online database built with a United Nations environment center. The director of the Ocean Census said finding 100,000 new species could cost at least 1 billion dollars. The project planned 10 more expeditions for 2025.

本文の only about 10 percent of ocean life has been discovered は「海の生き物の約10%しか発見されていない」という意味。
