Brain Rot Named Oxford's Word of the Year

音声・ゲームはこちらから

1Oxford University Press named brain rot its Word of the Year for 2024 on December 2. More than 37,000 people took part in the public vote that helped decide the winner. The phrase describes a supposed decline in a person's mental sharpness, which many people blame on spending too much time with trivial online content.

2Oxford said use of the term rose by 230% between 2023 and 2024. Brain rot spread mainly on TikTok among members of Generation Z and Generation Alpha. The publisher noted that people also use the phrase for the kind of content it describes, such as the Skibidi Toilet video series.

3The phrase is far older than social media. Its first recorded use was in 1854, in Walden, a book by the American writer Henry David Thoreau. Thoreau used it to criticize a society that, in his view, valued simple ideas over complex ones.

4The other words on Oxford's 2024 shortlist were demure, dynamic pricing, romantasy, slop and lore. Oxford's language experts picked the six finalists before the public vote began. The voting then ran for two weeks.

5Brain rot has stayed in everyday use since the award. When Dictionary.com picked 6-7 as its Word of the Year for 2025, it said the phrase showed all the signs of brainrot. Oxford's own winner for 2025, rage bait, also deals with how online content affects the people who see it.

文法ポイント:関係代名詞 which(前の内容に説明を加える)

カンマのあとの which は、前の名詞に情報を付け加える。本文の a supposed decline in a person's mental sharpness, which many people blame on ...(頭のさえの低下、それを多くの人は~のせいにする)がその例。blame A on B は「AをBのせいにする」。
