The OED Adds 23 Words of Japanese Origin

音声・ゲームはこちらから

1The Oxford English Dictionary added 23 words of Japanese origin in an update released on March 26, 2024. About half of the new entries relate to food or cooking. The OED, which traces the history of about 500,000 English words and phrases, prepared the update with researchers from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.

2The food words include donburi, karaage, onigiri, takoyaki and yakiniku. Okonomiyaki, a savory pancake made with cabbage and other ingredients on a hot plate, also made the list. Katsu is what the OED calls a boomerang word. The English word cutlet was borrowed into Japanese as katsuretsu, shortened to katsu, and then borrowed back into English.

3Several new entries come from Japanese arts and crafts, including kirigami, shibori, mangaka and washi tape. Kintsugi, first recorded in English in 2008, is the craft of mending broken pottery with lacquer and a fine powder of gold, silver or platinum. In English, the word has also gained a second meaning. It describes a view of life that accepts imperfection and sees healing as part of being human.

4Two entries describe Japanese entertainment. Isekai is a fantasy genre in which the main character is moved to, or reborn in, a different world. Tokusatsu refers to Japanese films and TV shows made with practical special effects, often with giant monsters and masked heroes, as in Godzilla in 1954.

5The OED adds a word only after its editors find it used in many different sources over a fair amount of time. Omotenashi, the Japanese idea of warm hospitality, was also part of the update.

全文訳

1オックスフォード英語辞典(OED)は、2024年3月26日に公開した更新で、日本語由来の23語を加えました。新しい見出し語の約半分が、食べ物や料理に関するものです。約50万の英語の単語や表現の歴史をたどる OED は、東京外国語大学の研究者と協力してこの更新を準備しました。

2食べ物の言葉には、donburi(どんぶり)、karaage(からあげ)、onigiri(おにぎり)、takoyaki(たこ焼き)、yakiniku(焼肉)があります。キャベツなどの具を入れて鉄板で焼く、甘くないパンケーキのような okonomiyaki(お好み焼き)も加わりました。katsu は、OED が「ブーメラン語」と呼ぶ言葉です。英語の cutlet が日本語に入ってカツレツとなり、短くなってカツになり、それがまた英語に取り入れられたのです。

3日本の美術や工芸から来た言葉もあり、kirigami(切り紙)、shibori(しぼり染め)、mangaka(マンガ家)、washi tape(マスキングテープ)などが加わりました。

文法ポイント:関係代名詞 what(~するもの・こと)

what は「~するもの・こと」という意味で、先行詞をふくむ関係代名詞。本文の Katsu is what the OED calls a boomerang word.(katsu は OED がブーメラン語と呼ぶものだ)がその例。call A B(AをBと呼ぶ)の A が what になっている。
