the drink after the bath
In one line
The shortest answer that works
After a Japanese bath, people drink something cold, and coffee milk from a glass bottle is the classic choice.
In 30 seconds
The standard explanation
Soaking in hot water for twenty minutes leaves you dehydrated and pleasantly weak, so a cold drink afterward is close to obligatory. Public bathhouses and hot spring inns keep a refrigerated case of glass bottles: plain milk, coffee milk, fruit milk. The ritual is to open it at the counter, put one hand on your hip and drink it in one go. Beer and fruit-flavored soda are the adult alternatives.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
There is a small ritual at the end of a Japanese bath that nobody teaches and everybody knows. You have been sitting in water hot enough to make you slightly dizzy, you have showered off, dried, and put on a cotton robe, and now you are warm, loose and thirsty.
In the lobby of a public bathhouse or a hot spring inn there is a glass-fronted refrigerator with bottles standing in rows: plain milk, coffee milk, and a pink one called fruit milk. You pay at the counter, the staff takes the cap off, and you drink it standing there, traditionally with one hand on your hip, which is really just what everyone has seen everyone else do.
The bottles are glass and get returned to a crate, which is part of the appeal. Beer is the adult version, and a fruit-flavored soda in a bottle with a marble in the neck is the summer one. The serious point underneath is hydration: a long soak takes a lot of water out of you, and drinking before and after a bath is genuinely good advice.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QWhy milk, of all things?
The usual explanation is historical: public bathhouses were among the places that had refrigeration when home fridges were rare, and dairies delivered bottles to them, so milk became the drink you could get at a bath. The habit outlasted the reason, as habits do.
QIs the hand on the hip a real custom?
It is a real image rather than a real rule. It appears in advertising, films and nostalgia, and people do it half knowingly, in the way you might. Nobody will correct you if you skip it, and nobody will find it odd if you do it.
QShould I drink before bathing too?
Yes. Public advice is to drink water before and after a long soak, avoid bathing right after alcohol, and get out if you feel light-headed. Older people are advised to be careful with very hot water and with the temperature difference between a cold changing room and a hot bath.
