If you ask visitors what surprised them most about Japan, a lot of them will say the toilets. A standard Japanese toilet seat is heated, and has a nozzle that sprays warm water, with a control panel on the wall or the armrest.
Many have a button that plays a flushing sound, so that other people cannot hear you, which solves a problem people used to solve by flushing repeatedly and wasting water. You find these in homes, in train stations and in shopping centers, and they are usually spotless.
The brand name Washlet belongs to one manufacturer, but people use it for all of them, the way English speakers say Hoover. My one piece of advice is to work out which button is stop before you press anything else.
日本で何にいちばん驚いたかと聞くと、多くの方がトイレと答えます。日本の標準的な便座は暖房つきで、温水を出すノズルがあり、壁か肘掛けに操作パネルがあります。
多くには流水音を鳴らすボタンがついていて、音を他人に聞かれずにすみます。以前は何度も水を流して解決していた問題を、水を無駄にせず解決したわけです。家庭にも駅にも商業施設にもあり、たいていとても清潔です。
ウォシュレットは一社の商標ですが、英語圏で Hoover と言うように、みんなが総称として使っています。助言はひとつだけ。ほかのボタンを押す前に、どれが「止」か確認してください。

QWhich button do I press?
The large one is usually stop, and the two spray buttons are marked with different icons for front and rear. If the panel is in Japanese only, the character for stop is 止. When in doubt, press the big square button.
大きいボタンはたいてい「止」で、洗浄ボタンは前後で絵が分かれています。日本語表記だけなら「止」の字を探してください。迷ったら大きな四角いボタンです。

It plays a flushing sound to cover any noise you make. It exists because people, mostly women, used to flush repeatedly for privacy, wasting a lot of water.
音で音を消すための擬音装置です。とくに女性が音を隠すため何度も水を流して大量の水を無駄にしていたことから生まれました。

They are cleaned frequently, and there is a strong shared expectation that you leave a public space as you found it. That expectation, more than the equipment, is what keeps them usable.

「ウォシュレット」はTOTOの登録商標で、1980年に発売された。温水洗浄便座そのものはアメリカの医療用機器が原型とされ、それを日本で家庭用に作り替えたものである。内閣府の消費動向調査では温水洗浄便座の普及率は8割前後で推移しており、家庭の主要な設備のひとつになっている。流水音を鳴らす装置は「音姫」などの名称で1980年代後半に商品化された。トイレのスリッパを履き替える習慣、公共トイレの清掃頻度の高さとあわせて、日本のトイレ体験は外国人旅行者の満足度調査でしばしば上位に入る。
