In one line
The shortest answer that works
In Japan money for weddings and funerals goes in a special envelope, and the color tells you which occasion it is for.
In 30 seconds
The standard explanation
Cash is never handed over bare. For a happy occasion you use a shugibukuro, an envelope with a red-and-white or gold-and-silver cord, and for a funeral a bushugibukuro with a black-and-white or silver one. Write the occasion and your name on the front, put the amount and your address on the inner envelope, and hand it over with both hands. Convenience stores and hundred-yen shops sell them.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
Giving money in Japan is normal at weddings and funerals, but handing over bare cash is not. The money goes in a decorated envelope, and the decoration carries the message. For celebrations you use a shugibukuro, with a cord called mizuhiki in red and white or gold and silver.
For a funeral you use a bushugibukuro, with black and white or plain silver. Get this backwards and you have said something quite wrong. The knot matters too. A bow that can be retied is for things you would be happy to repeat, such as a birth. A knot that cannot be undone is for a wedding or a funeral, events you hope happen only once.
Write the occasion in the printed space, your full name below it, and put the amount and your address on the inner envelope so the family can keep records. Use crisp new notes for a wedding and used ones for a funeral. Carry it in a small cloth so it does not get creased, and offer it with both hands.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
QWhat do I write on the front?
Most envelopes come with the occasion already printed, so you only add your full name below it, centered, in black brush pen for celebrations and pale gray for funerals. If nothing is printed, write the standard phrase for the occasion, which is usually shown on the package.
QNew notes or used notes?
New and unfolded for a wedding, because it shows you prepared for a happy event you knew was coming. Used, or new notes with a fold put in them, for a funeral, because crisp notes would suggest you had money ready for someone's death. Banks will exchange notes for you.
QWhat is the cloth people wrap it in?
A fukusa, a small square of silk. It keeps the envelope flat and clean in your bag and is unwrapped in front of the receptionist as you hand the envelope over. Colors follow the same logic: warm colors for celebrations, cool or dark for funerals. Purple works for both.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHAny nice envelope will do, since it is the money that matters.
FACTThe cord's color and knot state the occasion, so a red-and-white envelope at a funeral or a re-tieable bow at a wedding reads as a real mistake, not a stylistic choice.
