The standard explanation
Homongi literally means "visiting wear." It's a semi-formal kimono for women, and its main feature is the pattern, which runs across the seams from the shoulder to the hem as if the whole kimono were one painting. Women wear it as wedding guests, at formal parties, at tea gatherings, and at their children's school ceremonies. Both married and unmarried women can wear one.
As a short speech
A full paragraph you can read aloud
If you see a woman in a kimono at a Japanese wedding reception, and she isn't a close relative of the couple, there's a good chance she's wearing a homongi. The word means "visiting wear," and it's one step below the most formal kimono. You can recognize it by its pattern.
On many kimono, the design is dyed on the cloth before it's cut and sewn, so it breaks at the seams. On a homongi, the pattern continues across the seams, from the shoulder down to the hem, so the whole garment looks like a single painting.
To make this possible, the white cloth is first loosely sewn into the shape of a kimono, the design is sketched on it, and then it's taken apart again for dyeing. Unlike the long-sleeved furisode, a homongi can be worn by any adult woman, married or not. I think it's the most useful formal kimono, because it fits so many occasions.
Questions people actually ask
And how to answer them.
How is it different from a furisode?
A furisode has very long sleeves and is mainly worn by young unmarried women, for example at the Coming of Age Day ceremony. A homongi has sleeves of normal length, and women of any age can wear it.
Can I wear a homongi to a funeral?
No. A homongi is for happy occasions and usually has bright, colorful patterns. For funerals, people wear plain black mourning clothes.
Is a homongi only for visiting someone's house?
Not anymore. The name suggests visits, but today it's mainly worn to weddings, parties, tea gatherings, and school ceremonies. Today, the name tells you how formal it is, not where you wear it.
