The standard explanation

Kitsuke means dressing in kimono. It takes practice: the garment has no buttons, the length is adjusted by folding at the waist, and the sash alone can involve several cords and a complicated knot. Most Japanese people cannot manage it unaided, so there are dressing schools and salons, and hotels arrange dressers for weddings and coming-of-age ceremonies.

As a short speech

A full paragraph you can read aloud

Kitsuke is the skill of putting on a kimono, and visitors are often surprised to learn that most Japanese people cannot do it by themselves. A kimono has no buttons, no zip and no fixed length.

It is made long and the excess is folded up at the waist and held with cords, so the hem sits exactly right, and then the collar has to be set at the correct depth at the back. The sash is a separate problem: a formal obi is several meters long and the knot may need pads, cords and a board to hold its shape.

For a wedding or a coming-of-age ceremony people book a professional dresser, and getting ready starts before dawn. There are dressing schools that teach it as a course. One rule is absolute and worth memorizing: the left side goes over the right, for everyone. The opposite way is how the dead are dressed.

Questions people actually ask

And how to answer them.

QWhich side goes on top?

The left side over the right, for men and women alike. The reverse is used only when dressing the dead, so this is one mistake that genuinely upsets people. Check yourself in a mirror: from the front, the fold should look like a lowercase y.

QCan a tourist rent one and get dressed?

Yes, easily. Rental shops in Kyoto, Kanazawa, Asakusa and other tourist areas include dressing in the price, take about thirty minutes, and will do your hair as well. They also tell you how to sit, walk and use a toilet in it.

QWhy is it so complicated compared with a yukata?

A yukata is a single unlined layer with a simple sash, and many people can put one on themselves. A formal kimono has underlayers, multiple cords, a collar to shape and a stiff obi, and every one of those has to be adjusted on the body.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHJapanese people grow up knowing how to put on a kimono.
