自動詞と他動詞のイメージ
他動詞は主語の力が対象に直接届く動詞（reach the station＝駅に到達する）。自動詞は動きが主語の中で完結し、相手とつながるには前置詞が要る（arrive at the station）。前置詞は対象との「距離」のサイン。同じ意味でも動詞ごとに型が違うので、discuss the problem のようにフレーズで覚える。
活用が紛らわしい自他のペア
目的語があれば他動詞の側。過去形どうしが同じつづりになる lay に注意。

活用の落とし穴5
- 1lie（うそをつく）は規則変化lie-lied-lied-lying。「横になる」の lie-lay-lain と区別。He lied to me about his age.彼は私に年齢をごまかした。
- 2lay を見たら目的語を確認目的語なし→lie の過去形（横になった）。目的語あり→lay（置く・横たえる）。laid は lay の過去・過去分詞。She lay on the sofa and fell asleep.彼女はソファに横になって眠った。She laid her baby on the bed.彼女は赤ん坊をベッドに寝かせた。
- 3be seated＝座っている「座る」はふつう sit。seat は他動詞なので、seat で言うなら seat oneself か be seated。Please be seated.＝ご着席ください。
- 4find と foundfind-found-found（見つける）／found-founded-founded（設立する）。The school was founded in 1900.The company was founded in 1950.その会社は1950年に設立された。
- 5口語の lay に注意※口語では lay を lie の意味で使う人もいるが（I'm going to lay down）、入試では誤り。
前置詞をつけない他動詞
日本語の「〜について・〜に・〜と」につられて前置詞を入れるのが典型的な誤り。

前置詞を付けると意味が変わる3
- 1enter と enter intoenter the room（部屋に入る）。enter into＝（交渉・議論などを）始める。The two companies entered into negotiations.2社は交渉を始めた。
- 2attend と attend toattend the meeting（出席する）。attend to＝〜に注意を払う・〜の世話をする。I have some work to attend to.片づけなければならない仕事がある。
- 3join と join injoin the club（クラブに入る：他動詞）。join in＝（活動・遊びに）加わる：join in the game。「入会する」の意味で join with the club とは言わない。
