- 主語は「原因・理由・条件」、目的語を「〜は」と主語のように訳す
- enable O to V＝S のおかげで O は V できる
- prevent O from -ing＝S のせいで O は〜できない
訳し方の3ステップ3
- 1主語を副詞のように訳す「〜によって・〜のおかげで・〜のせいで・〜すると・〜を見ると」。原因・条件・時に読みかえる。
- 2目的語（人）を主語にするThe news made her happy. → 「彼女は」を主語に：その知らせを聞いて彼女は喜んだ。
- 3動詞を自然な日本語に「〜させた」を「〜した」「〜できた」に。直訳の「〜が私に…させた」は避ける。
直訳がぎこちない理由
日本語は「人」を主語にして出来事を語るのが自然、英語は「物」を主語にして因果関係を他動詞1つで表せる。だから英語の主語は日本語では「原因」の副詞に、英語の目的語は日本語の主語に変わる。英作文では逆に「〜のおかげで」を無生物主語に組み立てると引き締まる。
無生物主語の動詞 変換表

- 1enable / allow「可能にする」と訳さず「おかげで〜できる」。The scholarship enabled her to study abroad.奨学金のおかげで彼女は留学できた。
- 2prevent / keep fromfrom は「〜から離す」イメージ→「〜できない」（良い事なら「〜せずにすむ」）。The heavy snow prevented us from going out.大雪のせいで私たちは外出できなかった。
- 3makemake O V / C は「〜で O は…する／…になる」。What made you change your mind?どうして気が変わったの？
- 4take / bring交通手段・時間が主語。「〜すれば着く」「何の用で来たの？」。Ten minutes' walk will take you to the museum.10分歩けば美術館に着く。What brought you to Japan?どうして日本に来たのですか。
- 5remind A of B「A に B を思い出させる」→「〜を見ると（聞くと）思い出す」。This song reminds me of my high school days.この歌を聞くと高校時代を思い出す。
- 6show / suggest / say調査・研究・記事が主語。「〜によると」と訳す。The survey shows that teenagers sleep less than before.調査によると、10代は以前より睡眠時間が短い。
- 7save / costsave＝「〜せずにすむ」、cost＝「〜がかかる・〜を失う」。どちらも O を2つとる。This app saves me a lot of time.このアプリのおかげでかなり時間が省ける。The mistake cost him his job.その失敗で彼は職を失った。
- 8時代・場所が主語see・find・witness は「〜に…があった」「〜には…がいた」。※やや文語的。The 20th century saw two world wars.20世紀には2度の世界大戦があった。
書きかえで出る形
because 節・if 節 ⇄ 無生物主語の書きかえは定番。
