It began when a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd held a Father’s Day service at church to express gratitude to her father, who had single-handedly raised six children. At the time, after listening to a Mother’s Day sermon, Sonora thought, “There should be a day to thank fathers too!” and held a ceremony in June, the birth month of her late father.
Father’s Day was introduced to Japan around the 1950s. However, it wasn’t widely recognized at first, and it took time to become popular. In the 1980s, through department store marketing strategies and the Yellow Ribbon Campaign, the custom of giving yellow gifts on Father’s Day became established.
