Sometimes a song plays again and again in your head. This is called an earworm. Most people have one at least once a week.
Earworms are usually songs we know well. Songs with a fast tempo and an easy melody often become earworms. How can you stop one?
Do not fight it too hard. In one experiment, chewing gum helped. Chewing may stop your brain from "singing" quietly.

An earworm is a piece of music that repeats in your mind without your control. A large online survey in Finland found that most people experience earworms at least once a week. In 2017, researchers in London asked about 3,000 people which songs got stuck in their heads. The songs named most often had been successful in the charts and had appeared there recently.
Compared with similar songs, they also tended to have a faster tempo and a common overall melody shape with some unusual details. How can we get rid of them? A British study found that trying to push a song away often works less well than letting it play. Another study showed that chewing gum reduced the number of times songs came to mind.

Q2. What did the 2017 study ask about 3,000 people?
asked about 3,000 people which songs got stuck in their heads とあるので C。

trying to push a song away often works less well than letting it play とあるので、受け流すのがよいと推論でき A。
Earworms, known in psychology as involuntary musical imagery, are fragments of music that replay in the mind without conscious intention. A large internet survey in Finland found that most respondents experienced them at least weekly, particularly those who listened to or performed music regularly. A 2010 British study using questionnaires and diaries reported that the songs were always familiar to the person and usually faded within a day, and that accepting them worked better than actively resisting them, echoing the ironic rebound effect seen when people try not to think of a white bear.
In 2017, a London team analyzed songs named by about 3,000 people and compared the 100 most frequently named with 100 matched songs. Earworm songs tended to be faster, with a typical overall melodic contour but some unusual interval patterns. A 2015 experiment found that chewing gum reduced both deliberate and spontaneous musical thoughts, an effect not fully explained by distraction. The researchers suggested that gum interferes with the silent planning of mouth movements used for inner singing. However, this field relies heavily on self-reports, and the gum effect still needs more testing.

Q1. What is the passage mainly about?
Q2. In the 2017 study, how were earworm songs different from matched songs?
tended to be faster, with a typical overall melodic contour but some unusual interval patterns とあるので B。
Q3. Why does the author mention that the gum effect was "not fully explained by distraction"?
