Survey Finds Most High Schoolers Have Doubted 'Youth Trend' Reports
1More than 60 percent of high school students in a Japanese survey said they have doubted news reports claiming something was popular among young people. Wakamono Research, a Tokyo company that studies teens and young adults, released the results on October 31. The online survey of 386 high school students across Japan was carried out from May 25 to June 4.
2Students were asked whether they had ever thought a trend was not really popular when TV or online news said it was popular with young people. In total, 62.4 percent said yes, while 37.6 percent said no.
3Some complaints were about timing. Several students said a trend had already passed by the time it appeared on the news, and one said a story covered a trend from a week earlier. Others said they had never heard of the words or items being reported, or that no one around them used them.
4Some answers pointed to a bigger problem. One student said some articles mistake a trend on part of social media for a trend among all young people. Others said trends differ between Tokyo and other prefectures, and that the word young covers too wide a range of ages.
5Among the students who said no, some said the trends on the news were the same ones they saw at school or on Instagram and TikTok. Some trusted the reports because they believed TV only covers things that people are talking about. Others simply said they rarely watch the news.

文法ポイント:mistake A for B(A を B とまちがえる)
本文の some articles mistake a trend on part of social media for a trend among all young people がその例(一部のSNSでの流行を、若者全体の流行とまちがえる)。受け身 be mistaken for ~ もよく使う。
