An AI Tutor and Lower Grades

1College students who could use an AI tutor got lower grades in a big U.S. experiment. The study was done at the University of Maryland.

2Researchers studied 2,379 students and 30 teachers in the fall of 2025. They put the teachers into two groups by chance. Only students in one group could ask the AI tutor questions. The AI was built into their class websites.

3The researchers compared classes of the same course. Final grades in the AI classes were about four points lower out of 100. But only about 15 percent of those students actually used the tutor.

4The paper is an early version, so it may change.

5The team also looked at the students' questions to the AI. About 74 percent of the questions asked for answers, explanations or other information. Only 0.7 percent of them asked the AI for feedback on the students' own work.

本文の The study was done は「研究は行われた」、The AI was built into their class websites
