1This year, autumn leaves in many parts of Japan may look their best a little later than usual. The weather company Weathernews said warm weather in the coming weeks will likely slow the change of colors.

2In Japan, going out to see red and yellow leaves is called momijigari. The word means hunting for autumn leaves.

3The company expects Irohazaka in Nikko to start looking its best around October 23. In Arashiyama, Kyoto, the best time may begin around November 24.

4Leaves have also been turning red later over the years. Japan's weather agency has kept records of maple trees for many years. Since 1954, the day their leaves turn red has moved about three days later every 10 years.

5Warmer weather may also make the colors weaker. In 2025, scientists published a study of leaves in high mountains. In the worst case, the colors could be about 15 percent weaker. That could happen by the end of this century, they said.

全文訳

1今年は日本の多くの場所で、紅葉の見ごろがいつもより少し遅くなりそうです。天気の会社ウェザーニューズは、この先も暖かい日が多そうなので、色の変わり方がゆっくりになるだろうと説明しています。

2日本では、赤や黄色の葉を見に出かけることを「紅葉狩り」といいます。「秋の葉をさがしに行く」という意味の言葉です。

3ウェザーニューズは、日光のいろは坂は10月23日ごろから見ごろになると予想しています。京都の嵐山では、11月24日ごろから見ごろになりそうです。

4葉が赤くなる時期は、長い年月の中でも遅くなってきています。気象庁は、長年カエデの木の記録をとっています。1954年から、葉が赤くなる日は10年に約3日ずつ遅くなってきました。

5暖かくなると、色がうすくなるおそれもあります。2025年、研究チームが高い山の紅葉についての研究を発表しました。いちばん悪い場合、色が約15％うすくなるかもしれません。それは今世紀の終わりまでに起こるかもしれない、と研究チームは発表しました。

文法ポイント：動名詞（～ing）が主語になる形

動詞に ing をつけると「～すること」という名詞になり、文の主語にできる。本文の going out to see red and yellow leaves is called momijigari は「赤や黄色の葉を見に出かけることは紅葉狩りとよばれる」。主語は1つのこととして数えるので is を使う。
