1Many websites and online games in Japan paused their services on the evening of Oct. 21. The cause was two serious flaws in PHP, a programming language used to build websites.

2PHP runs on servers, the computers that send web pages to users. When you search for something or log in, it works out what the page should show you. About 69 percent of websites use it, a research firm based in Europe has found. The name first came from Personal Home Page Tools, a set of programs made in 1994. Today the letters stand for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor.

3Both flaws were rated 9.2 out of 10 on a common danger scale, which puts them in the most serious group. The flaws could let attackers run their own code on a web server without logging in. The PHP team released fixed versions of PHP at around 11 p.m. Japan time. It said the only safe step is to update.

4Japan's National Cybersecurity Office warned that websites could be broken into if operators did not act. It also said that pausing a site was one way to lower the risk if the fix could not be added quickly. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also made an urgent request on X about the flaws.

5Many services stopped as a precaution against possible attacks. Games such as Uma Musume Pretty Derby and Granblue Fantasy were paused too. Pixiv and Niconico also had emergency maintenance, and some banks stopped parts of their services.

文法ポイント:非制限用法の which(前の内容全体を指す , which)

Both flaws were rated 9.2 out of 10 on a common danger scale, which puts them in the most serious group は、「9.2点とされたこと」を which が受けて、「それで、いちばん深刻なグループに入る」という意味になる。
