Exercising on More Days Is Linked to Deeper Sleep
1Young adults who exercised for at least 10 minutes on more days got deeper sleep, a study from the University of Texas at Austin has found. Earlier research looked at total exercise time, but this team focused on how often people exercised. The study was published in the Journal of Physical Activity & Health.
2The researchers followed 69 students with an average age of 21.5, and 63 percent of them were women. Each student wore a Fitbit fitness tracker on the wrist. The trackers recorded activity and sleep during two periods that lasted eight months in total. The students also answered morning surveys about their energy, stress and sleep quality.
3Students who had more days with at least 10 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity got a larger share of non-REM sleep in the first three hours of sleep. This kind of activity makes you breathe harder, though you can still talk. On a scale from 1 to 10, it feels like about a 6. In the university's report, non-REM sleep means deep sleep, when the body and mind recover a lot.
4Light activity also mattered. Moving lightly for at least three minutes in more hours of the day was linked to longer sleep. More light activity overall was linked to higher energy in the morning. Benjamin Baird, one of the researchers, said that more non-REM sleep went along with a better mood and more energy the next day.
5The study was observational, so it shows a link rather than proof that exercise causes better sleep. It also included only young adults. Guidelines from the CDC and the WHO recommend 150 minutes of exercise a week, but they do not say how to divide those minutes across the week. Chris Corral, who co-led the study, said moving every day may do more for sleep than saving all exercise for the weekend. The team is now preparing a five-year study with a wider group of people.

文法ポイント:比較級 + than と rather than(AよりもB)
本文の it shows a link rather than proof は「証明ではなく、関係を示す」。もう1つ、moving every day may do more for sleep than saving all exercise for the weekend の more than ~ は「~より多く」で(do more for ~ は「~のためにより役立つ」)、動名詞(moving / saving)どうしをくらべている。
