Spaced Math Practice Beat Doing It All in One Lesson
1Students scored higher on a math test when they spread their practice over three weeks instead of doing it all in one lesson, a classroom study has found. Psychologists Doug Rohrer and Marissa Hartwig of the University of South Florida carried out the study with William Emeny of Wyvern College, a school in England. They published the results in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology in 2021.
2The researchers ran two experiments with a total of 99 Year 7 students, aged 11 to 12, at a large school in the UK. The students learned two topics outside their usual curriculum: Venn diagram problems and permutations, or ways to arrange things in order. For one topic, each student solved 12 practice problems in a single session. For the other, the same number of problems was split into three sessions held one week apart. After each problem, the students saw the solution and corrected their work.
3About four weeks after practice ended, the students took a test with four new problems on each topic. In both experiments, they did better on the topic they had spaced out. The researchers said spacing raised test scores by more than half. The benefit was not linked to the students' earlier national math test scores.
4The students also predicted their scores twice, right after practice and again just before the test. After massed practice, their predictions were too high. After spaced practice, the predictions were close to their actual scores. The researchers suggested that solving many similar problems in a row can make students feel they have mastered a skill when the learning may not last.
5Because every student tried both schedules, the researchers could compare the two directly. However, the study was small and took place in a single school. The researchers said little is known about the best number of sessions or the best length of the gaps. Both schedules used the same amount of practice, 12 problems per topic.

本文の they did better on the topic they had spaced out は、テストで成績がよかった(過去)ときより前に、その単元を間をあけて練習していた、という順番を had spaced で示している。
