Reading for Fun and the Brain

1Children who started reading for fun early did better on tests later, a large study found. Researchers at the University of Cambridge in the U.K. and Fudan University in China did the study.

2They used data on more than 10,000 children in the United States. The children were 9 to 11 years old when the data was first collected. Their parents answered questions about their reading.

3About half of the children read for fun for three years or more. These children got better grades at school. They also had fewer signs of depression and stress. They used screens less and slept longer.

4For test scores, the best amount was about 12 hours of reading a week. That is less than two hours a day. Reading more than that did not bring extra benefits. The researchers think too much reading may leave less time for sports and friends.

5The study shows a link, but it does not prove that reading causes these changes. The team also took family income into account.

本文では better grades(よりよい成績)、fewer signs(より少ないサイン)、used screens less(画面をより少なく使った)、slept longer(より長く眠った)。
