Is Music Good for Studying?

1Students remembered less when they studied while listening to songs with lyrics, a study found. Researchers at the University of Porto in Portugal did the study.

2More than 100 university students took part online. They took memory and reading tests in three ways. One way was in silence. Another was with music without lyrics, and the last was with pop songs with lyrics. The songs were in Portuguese.

3When they heard songs with lyrics, the students remembered fewer words and pictures than in silence. In the reading test, they did better with music without lyrics than with songs with lyrics. Music without lyrics did not clearly help or hurt.

4About one in three students said they often or always listened to music while studying. Some students felt that music without lyrics helped them, but the tests did not show that.

5In a 2018 report, researchers in Britain looked at 65 studies together. They found that songs with lyrics and talking people could understand were the most distracting.

文法ポイント:比較級 + than(~より…)

本文の the students remembered fewer words and pictures than in silence は「静かなときより、覚えた単語や絵が少なかった」。 did better ... than ~ の better は well の比較級。
