An Old Monkey Doll Is Popular Again
1Monchhichi, a small monkey doll from Japan, is popular again with teenagers. It first went on sale in 1974.
2In May, the clothing company WEGO asked young people about trends on Instagram. Monchhichi was the top character for high school girls. Another company, AMF, made a list of 50 trend words for junior high and high school girls. Monchhichi was on that list too.
3Reports say the new boom started in Thailand in 2024. A famous Thai actress showed the doll on her bag on social media. Stars in South Korea also shared photos of it.
4Now many young people in Japan carry the doll as a bag charm. Capsule toys with Monchhichi often sell out quickly. Since 1974, more than 70 million Monchhichi dolls have been sold in over 30 countries.
