Acupressure Eased Test Anxiety in Two Small Trials

1Students who had points on their body pressed before an exam reported less test anxiety in two small randomized trials. The studies, carried out at universities in Cyprus and Iran, appeared in BMC Psychology in 2025 and BMC Medical Education in 2023.

2The technique, known as acupressure, is based on traditional Chinese medicine. Instead of inserting needles, as in acupuncture, a person presses specific points with the fingertips. The Iranian researchers said it is still unclear how acupressure might work.

3In the newer study, researchers at Eastern Mediterranean University randomly divided 118 second-year nursing students into two equal groups. On the day of an exam, one group received acupressure on three points: on the inner arm near the wrist, between the eyebrows and in the ear. The other group received no therapy and simply waited. In the acupressure group, the average score on a test anxiety questionnaire fell from about 53 to 39, while the other group's score rose slightly from about 49 to 52. The acupressure group's average heart rate also dropped from about 98 to 89 beats per minute.

4The earlier study, at Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences in Iran, involved 114 medical students. An hour before a test, half of them had a point in the upper ear, called Shen Men, pressed for 10 minutes. The other half had a spot on the earlobe pressed as a fake treatment. Anxiety scores fell in the first group but stayed the same in the second. In the first group, the share of students with severe anxiety dropped from 31.6 percent to 10.5 percent.

5Both trials were small, and each took place at a single university. All the participants were university students, and the anxiety results came from questionnaires in which they rated their own feelings. The Cyprus team said the placebo effect may have played a role, and the Iranian team called for more research using objective measures. Neither trial measured whether students got higher test scores.

本文の half of them had a point in the upper ear ... pressed は「半分の学生は耳の上のほうのツボを押してもらった」。 Students who had points on their body pressed
