Japan Beats Russia to Reclaim the Judo Mixed Team Title

1Japan has won the mixed team title at the World Judo Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, defeating Russia 4-2 in the final on October 11. The team event was held on the last day of the championships at the city's National Gymnastics Arena. NHK reported that it was Japan's first gold in the event in two years.

2In the mixed team format, each country fields judoka in three men's and three women's weight categories. Bouts are fought one at a time, and the team with more wins takes the match. A men's loss can be made up by a women's win, and the other way around.

3Several Japanese judoka won close bouts in the final. Shiho Tanaka won her bout in golden score, the extra time used when a contest is level after regular time. Sanshiro Murao and Mao Arai also beat their Russian opponents, while heavyweight Kenta Nakano lost his bout to Tamerlan Bashaev. Akari Omori then scored a waza-ari against Irina Zueva to secure Japan's fourth win and the gold medal.

4Several Japanese judoka had already stood out in the individual events. Murao kept his men's 90-kilogram world title, beating fellow Japanese judoka Goki Tajima. NHK also reported that Hifumi Abe and his younger sister Uta Abe both won gold medals in Baku.

5In the team competition, Russia finished with the silver medal. Uzbekistan beat Mongolia and Georgia beat China in the matches for bronze.
