Total Eclipse Brings Brief Darkness to Iceland and Spain

1A total solar eclipse swept across Greenland, Iceland and northern Spain on August 12, 2026, drawing millions of people outdoors. It was the first total solar eclipse visible from central and western Europe since 1999. For mainland Spain, it was the first in more than a century.

2The Moon's shadow crossed the Arctic and then moved south, mostly over the Atlantic Ocean. The longest totality, 2 minutes and 18 seconds, occurred off the west coast of Iceland. In Reykjavík, totality lasted only about one minute, but it was the city's first total eclipse since 1433.

3About 75,000 foreign visitors traveled to Iceland for the eclipse, and hotels were fully booked. More than 30 cruise ships carrying 53,000 passengers also arrived. However, clouds and rain blocked the view in many parts of the country. Even so, an Astronomy magazine reporter in Iceland noticed the light fade and measured a temperature drop of about 6 degrees Celsius.

4In Spain, the skies were mostly clear. Because the eclipse came close to sunset, the Sun was low in the sky. Totality in Spain lasted less than two minutes, and in some cities the Sun set before the partial eclipse had ended. Experts said special eclipse glasses were essential, even when only a thin sliver of the Sun was visible.

5Spain will not have to wait long for the next eclipse. On August 2, 2027, a total eclipse will cross southern Spain and North Africa, with totality lasting up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds at its longest point. On January 26, 2028, an annular eclipse, also called a ring of fire, will be visible over Spain.

文法ポイント:付帯状況の with(with + 名詞 + ~ing)

本文の a total eclipse will cross southern Spain and North Africa, with totality lasting up to 6 minutes and 23 seconds は「皆既が最大6分23秒続く状態で、スペイン南部と北アフリカを横切る」という意味。
