1A library in Australia got back a book about 150 years late. The book is called The Antiquities of Athens. It was printed in 1858.

2A man found the book while he was fixing an old house. It was inside a box in a fireplace. Someone had closed the fireplace with bricks long ago.

3The book belongs to Kiama Library in New South Wales. The library opened in 1872 with about 1,000 books. This book was number 506.

4In those days, the late fee was three pence a week. The library manager said the fee would now be about 28,000 Australian dollars. Nobody has to pay it. The library will not lend the book again, but people can see it in the library's history collection.

全文訳

1オーストラリアの図書館に、約150年おくれて本が返ってきました。その本の題名は「アテネの古代遺跡」です。1858年に印刷されたものです。

2ある男性が、古い家を修理しているときにこの本を見つけました。本は暖炉の中の箱に入っていました。その暖炉は、ずっと昔にだれかがレンガでふさいでいたのです。

3この本は、ニューサウスウェールズ州のキアマ図書館のものです。図書館は1872年に、約1000冊の本で開館しました。この本は506番でした。

4当時の延滞料は、1週間に3ペンスでした。図書館長によると、その延滞料は今のお金で約28000オーストラリアドルになるそうです。でも、だれもはらう必要はありません。図書館はこの本を二度と貸し出しませんが、図書館の歴史資料として見ることができます。

文法ポイント：過去完了（had + 過去分詞）

過去のある時点よりも前に起きていたことを表す。本文の Someone had closed the fireplace with bricks long ago. は、男性が本を見つけるよりずっと前に暖炉がふさがれていたことを示している。
