Buses With Nobody in the Driver's Seat
1Japan plans to test public buses with no driver on board. The tests will start in the 2027 fiscal year. The government announced the plan in July 2026.
2The buses will carry passengers on regular routes. No one will sit in the driver's seat. Instead, staff in another place will watch the buses with a remote system. This kind of self-driving is called Level 4.
3The buses will need some new systems, too. Their doors must open and close by themselves. Screens inside will show where the bus is going. Staff will also help passengers from a distance.
4Japan has tested self-driving vehicles before. However, most of them were small, or they had a safety driver on board. Bus companies and carmakers could apply to join the project until July 29.

文法ポイント:助動詞 must(〜しなければならない)
Their doors must open and close by themselves.
