Arctic Winter Sea Ice Hits Record Low for Second Year
1Arctic sea ice reached its smallest winter maximum on record in March 2026, tying the low set in 2025, the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) said on March 26. The ice likely peaked on March 15 at 14.29 million square kilometers. That was just below the 2025 record of 14.31 million square kilometers.
2Because the gap is smaller than 40,000 square kilometers, the two years are considered a statistical tie. They are the lowest winter peaks in the 48-year satellite record. The 2026 maximum was about 1.35 million square kilometers below the 1981 to 2010 average, an area more than three times the size of Japan.
3Sea ice reflects much of the sun's heat back into space. Scientists compare it to a giant air conditioner that also helps shape rain and storm patterns around the world. NSIDC scientist Walt Meier said the low maximum gives the spring and summer melt season a head start. A small winter peak often points to a smaller summer minimum, which is measured in September.
4Meier also said that one or two record years do not mean much on their own. However, he said they fit a clear downward trend that scientists have tracked since 1979. Zack Labe, a scientist at Climate Central, said the Arctic was entering late winter in one of its weakest states in the satellite record.
5Scientists say climate change could bring ice-free Arctic summers as early as the middle of this century. Ice-free summers could also bring more shipping, fishing and mining to the region.
