China's Maglev Test Hits 700 km/h on a Short Track

1A research team in China has accelerated a maglev test vehicle to 700 kilometers per hour in about two seconds. The test was carried out by the National University of Defense Technology. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported the result on December 25, 2025.

2The run took place on a test line only 400 meters long. The vehicle carried a load of about one tonne and came to a safe stop after reaching top speed. The university said it was the fastest speed ever recorded for a superconducting electric maglev test of this type.

3A maglev, short for magnetic levitation, uses powerful magnets to lift a vehicle off its track and push it forward. Because there is no contact with rails, there is almost no friction to slow it down. The team said it had to solve problems with propulsion, power storage and superconducting magnets over about 10 years of research.

4The vehicle in the test was not a passenger train. Video of the run showed what looked like a bare frame rather than a passenger car. The top speed was still more than twice that of the fastest shinkansen in service in Japan.

5Researchers said the technology could one day be used for high-speed transport inside vacuum tubes. They also said it could give rockets and aircraft an extra push at launch and help engineers test materials at extreme speeds. The university plans further development and industrial use of the technology.

文法ポイント:関係代名詞 what(〜するもの・こと)

Video of the run showed what looked like a bare frame
