The Osaka Expo Closes With 25 Million Visits
1The Osaka-Kansai Expo closed on October 13, 2025, after 184 days on an artificial island in Osaka Bay. The last night ended with a closing ceremony, fireworks, and a drone show over the site. Japan and 158 countries and regions took part under the theme of designing a future society for our lives.
2The organizers said there were about 29 million admissions in total. That figure includes about 3.44 million entries by staff and other workers with passes. The final number of general visitors was about 25.58 million. Osaka first hosted a World Expo in 1970, and Aichi Prefecture held one in 2005.
3Before the Expo opened, many people had worried about rising costs and slow ticket sales. Crowds grew over the months, and from mid-September daily attendance often topped 200,000. Ticket sales passed the break-even line of 18 million. By the final day, more than 22 million tickets had been sold. In early October, the organizers said they expected an operating profit of 23 billion to 28 billion yen.
4The symbol of the site was the Grand Ring, a wooden walkway about two kilometers around. Guinness World Records recognized it as the world's largest wooden architectural structure. About 200 meters of the Grand Ring will be preserved. The remaining sections are due to be dismantled and reused, although some people have called for keeping the whole ring.
5Sales of official goods, many of them featuring the mascot Myaku-Myaku, had reached about 80 billion yen by the end of August, Kyodo News reported. Official goods will stay on sale until March 2026. At the closing ceremony, the Expo flag was handed to Saudi Arabia, which will host the next World Expo in Riyadh in 2030.
