Eight Arms, Shared Jobs

1Wild octopuses tend to explore with their front arms and move around with their back arms, a new study has found. Researchers from Florida Atlantic University and the Marine Biological Laboratory in Massachusetts published the results in Scientific Reports in September 2025. The team studied octopuses living in the wild, not in tanks.

2The team analyzed one-minute videos of 25 octopuses from three species. Divers filmed the clips between 2007 and 2015 in six shallow habitats in the Caribbean and Spain, ranging from sandy bottoms to coral reefs. Working frame by frame, the researchers logged nearly 4,000 arm actions and almost 7,000 changes in arm shape, such as bending and stretching. A single minute of video took hours to analyze.

3Overall, the front arms did about 60 percent of all arm actions. The front arms were used more for exploring, while the back arms did more of the work of moving. There was no preference between the left and right sides.

4Still, every arm was able to perform every action, and a single arm could do several things at the same time. A biologist on the team said octopuses can call on almost any arm for almost any task. She also said octopuses have more neurons in their arms than in their central brain. The researchers said the findings could guide engineers who design soft robots for medicine or for reaching tight spaces.

Working frame by frame, the researchers logged ...
