Japan's New Heat Record and Its Hottest Summer

1A thermometer in Isesaki, Gunma Prefecture, read 41.8 degrees Celsius at 2:26 p.m. on August 5, 2025. It was the highest temperature ever officially recorded in Japan. The old national record had stood for only a week. A city in Hyogo Prefecture had reached 41.2 degrees on July 30.

2The heat was not limited to one city. That day, 14 observation points in five prefectures hit 40 degrees or more, the largest number on a single day since records began. Heatstroke alerts were issued in almost every prefecture. People were urged to use air conditioners and avoid going outside during the day.

3After the season ended, the Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed a new record for the whole summer. The average temperature from June to August was 2.36 degrees above normal. It was the hottest summer since statistics started in 1898. The previous record summers, in 2023 and 2024, were 1.76 degrees above normal.

4Over the year, temperatures of 40 degrees or higher were recorded at 30 locations in 13 prefectures. These readings came on nine different days. That was the largest number of locations since comparable data began in 2010.

5The agency said the westerly jet stream flowed farther north than usual, bringing warm air over Japan. June and July both set records for their months. August was 1.84 degrees above normal, the second-highest figure for that month. Of 153 weather stations, 132 recorded their hottest summer on record.

本文の the old national record had stood for only a week は「8月5日の時点で、前の記録は1週間しか続いていなかった」という意味。
