恒星間天体3I/ATLASとは?

3I/ATLAS: A Visitor from Another Star System

1A comet from another star system passed through our solar system in 2025. Astronomers named the comet 3I/ATLAS, and it is only the third interstellar object ever confirmed. The first two were 'Oumuamua in 2017 and Borisov in 2019.

2The NASA-funded ATLAS survey telescope in Río Hurtado, Chile, first reported the comet on July 1, 2025. When astronomers checked older images, they found that the comet had already been caught on camera in mid-June. Its orbit turned out to be hyperbolic, meaning the comet is not bound to the Sun and will never return.

3The comet's speed was one of the biggest clues to its origin. Near its closest approach to the Sun in late October 2025, the comet was moving at roughly 250,000 kilometers per hour. The European Space Agency (ESA) said that was the fastest speed ever recorded for a visitor to our solar system. ESA said such a high speed suggests the comet has been drifting through space for billions of years.

4Spacecraft across the solar system turned their cameras toward the comet. In early October 2025, the comet passed about 29 million kilometers from Mars. Orbiters there, including NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and ESA's Mars Express, photographed the comet. In November 2025, ESA's Juice spacecraft, which is on its way to Jupiter, observed the comet's glowing coma and tail.

5The comet posed no danger to Earth. Its closest approach to Earth, in December 2025, was about 270 million kilometers. That is nearly twice the distance between Earth and the Sun. NASA said the comet's solid core is no more than about 5.6 kilometers wide and could be much smaller.

6The ice and dust in the comet formed around a different star, so scientists see it as a sample from another planetary system. Most of the Juice data reached Earth in February 2026, and scientists are still studying it.

Its orbit turned out to be hyperbolic, meaning the comet is not bound to the Sun
