Clownfish Get Smaller to Stay Alive

1Clownfish can make their bodies shorter when the ocean gets too hot. Scientists from Newcastle University in Britain shared this finding in May 2025.

2The team studied 134 wild clownfish in Papua New Guinea. In 2023, the sea there became much hotter than usual. The team watched the fish from February to August. The scientists measured each fish every month for five months.

3Of the 134 fish, 100 became shorter. They did not just get thinner. They really got shorter. Fish that shrank were up to 78 percent more likely to survive.

4Clownfish live in pairs in sea anemones. When both partners shrank together, they had a better chance of staying alive. Many fish grew again after the water cooled down.

本文の the sea there became much hotter than usual は「いつもよりずっと熱く」。
