Seeing Beyond the Rainbow

1Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, said in April 2025 that they had shown people a color never seen before. The team named the color olo. The study was published in the journal Science Advances.

2To understand the trick, you need to know how color vision works. The retina contains three types of cone cells, which respond mainly to short, medium and long wavelengths of light. Because their sensitivities overlap, any natural light that excites the medium cones also stimulates at least one other type. As a result, the brain has never received a signal from those cones alone.

3The team built a system called Oz, named after the magical land in The Wizard of Oz. After mapping the cone cells in a small patch of each volunteer's retina, they fired tiny doses of laser light at the medium cones only. All five participants reported a blue-green so intense that ordinary colors looked dull beside it. One of them was Ren Ng, an engineer who helped lead the study. In matching tests, they had to add white light to olo before it resembled the closest ordinary color, a teal.

4Not everyone is convinced, though. Some vision experts said olo is not truly a new color, because existing theories can already explain it. The researchers hope Oz could one day help scientists study color blindness and eye diseases. They also said olo will not show up on phones or TVs any time soon.

本文の a blue-green so intense that ordinary colors looked dull は「ふつうの色がくすんで見えるほど強烈な青緑」。
